Building skills, confidence and community: Bunji Launchpad joins Bulli Woonona Men’s Shed
Through hands-on timber projects and one-on-one mentoring, Launchpad participants are gaining life skills, independence and community connection.
At Bunji, we believe in giving young people with disabilities the skills and support they need to thrive. That’s why our SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) Launchpad program has teamed up with the Bulli Woonona Men’s Shed - a trusted community space where local men come together to share knowledge and support others.
Learning real-world skills for independence
Several of our Launchpad participants expressed an interest in learning practical skills like timber work and basic home maintenance - things that will help them live more independently. So, we reached out to the Men’s Shed, and their response was incredible.
Mentorship and hands-on projects
The Men’s Shed members saw how valuable this could be and volunteered their time fortnightly to provide one-on-one guidance. Now, every other week, our participants work on their own timber projects while learning directly from experienced community mentors.
Timber projects that build confidence and connection
So far, some of the things they have made include engraved jewellery boxes, custom chopping boards, and even a puppet theatre. One participant, Michael, proudly used the palings he made to fix a fence at home, something he never thought he’d be able to do on his own.
However, this partnership is about more than just woodwork. It’s helping build confidence, independence and social connection - key outcomes supported by the NDIS, and so important for young people as they take steps toward adulthood and employment. The volunteers at the Men’s Shed have also said how meaningful it’s been for them to share their skills and build new friendships.
